Learning a language also necessitates gaining an understanding of the cultural background of the people who speak the language. The students, therefore, are taught and encouraged to develop an understanding and respect for the culture, customs and values of the peoples of various nations.
While in the 5th grade, they are given an opportunity to experience a homestay in Australia. Moreover, since cultural respect springs first and foremost from an awareness and appreciation of one's own culture, students are given opportunities to experience some of Japan's own traditional arts.
