2020.11.01 HAPPY HALLOWEEN

This week we enjoyed some Halloween themes during regular classes. At lunchtime and other breaks we were able to enjoy ‘Trick or Treat’ and other special activities with students. It was great fun. Halloween is a North American tradition. When I was a child in Australia we never did Halloween although we watched it on American TV programs. Similar to Japan and many other countries though, kids and adults in Australia recently enjoy Halloween as a fun festival. Why has Halloween become so globally popular? I think Japanese culture has some connection. In recent years, Japanese popular cultures such as anime and costume play have spread around the world. Halloween is the perfect chance for a costume party. This is why we not only see traditional costumes themes of scary ghosts and skeletons, but also cartoon characters like Mario and other pop culture icons. My modern image of Halloween is a combination of historical American culture mixed with Japanese costume play culture. However the modern global Halloween has developed, it’s a lot of fun!

今週は、授業でもハロウィーンをテーマに楽しく学習しました。 また、昼休みや休憩時間にも、「トリック・オア・トリート」などの特別な活動を子どもたちとと楽しむことができました。 それは、とても楽しい時間でした。 ハロウィーンは北米の伝統です。 私がオーストラリアの子ども時代、アメリカのテレビ番組では見ていましたが、ハロウィーンは一度もしませんでした。 日本や他の多くの国と同様に、オーストラリアの子どもと大人も最近になって、楽しいお祭りとしてハロウィーンを楽しむようになりました。 なぜハロウィーンは世界的に人気になったのでしょう？ 私は、日本の文化には何らかのつながりがあると思います。 近年、アニメやコスプレなど日本の大衆文化が世界中に広がっています。 ハロウィーンはコスチュームパーティーの絶好のチャンスです。 これが、怖い幽霊や骸骨の伝統的な衣装のテーマだけでなく、マリオや他のポップカルチャーのアイコンのような漫画のキャラクターのコスチュームを見る理由です。 現代のハロウィーンのイメージは、歴史的なアメリカの文化と日本のコスプレ文化の組み合わせではないでしょうか。 ハロウィンが現代的、グローバル的に発展したとしても、またそれも、とても楽しいですね！
