At the assembly, we talked about common sense. What is it? Do we have it? This conversation started by telling students about Australian common sense. First, there are no earthquakes in Australia. We don’t think about it. However, There are lots of poisonous snakes and spiders in Australia, even in big cities. Spiders like cool, dark places. So if we change our shoes outside, it is common sense to check inside shoes before putting them on. When walking in a natural area, of course we look but we also listen carefully. If we hear some noise in the grass, it might be a snake and we stop. This is common sense. From here I asked students about safety. I asked students about helping younger students. Because common sense is not just following rules. It is good situational judgment. Seeing the situation and making a good decision is common sense. There is good common sense for each time, place and situation. It starts by understanding the situation and then judging well. We want our students to think about situational judgement and develop their common sense.
