In the last few days the government has lifted the emergency and schools are reopening. As principal of the elementary school, I would like to share my thoughts about the virus situation and school reopening. For many parents, just a few weeks ago the infection rate was reaching a national peak and anxiety was building throughout Japan. Now we are back to school. This sudden switch may be difficult for parents worrying about the safety of their children. I think the risk of infection is at its lowest point since February. However, as society restarts and activity returns to close to normal, it seems inevitable that the virus will return. The only question is when? The probability of a second or even a third wave of the virus, especially through the colder months is quite high. Ultimately, until a vaccine and or effective medicine can be developed, hopefully in the next 6-8 months, we are going to “dance” with the virus. This “dance” means periodic closing when the virus re-emerges and then opening after safety is restored. For now we open the school. But for how long will students be able to attend? We cannot know clearly. For this reason Seibo will maintain its strong home-schooling system as a back up. Apart from academic studies, attending school is good for students’ physical and emotional health. So although many parents may feel apprehension, it is good for students to attend school while we have the chance.

数日前、政府は緊急事態宣言を解除し、学校の再開が始まりました。 小学校の校長として、ウイルスの状況と学校の再開についての私の考えをお伝えしたいと思います。 ほんの数週間前、感染率は全国的なピークに達し、日本中で不安が高まりました。 しかし今、私たちは学校に戻っています。 この突然の切り替えは、子供の安全を心配している親にとっては難しいかもしれません。 感染のリスクは2月以来最低のポイントだと思います。 しかし、社会が再び動き始め、活動が正常に戻るので、ウイルスが戻ることは避けられないようです。 では、感染リスクが再び高まるのはいつでしょうか？ ウイルス感染の第2波または第3波が寒い時期にやってくる確率は非常に高いです。 ですから、ワクチンや効果的な薬が開発されるまで、できればこれからの6〜8月の間は、ウイルスと「ダンス」（共存）しましょう。 この場合の「ダンス」（共存）とは、ウイルスが再出現したときに定期的に閉じ、安全が回復した後に開くことを意味します。 とりあえず学校を開きます。 しかし、子どもたちはどのくらいの期間参加できるでしょうか？ はっきりわかりません。 このため、聖母では強力な在宅教育制度をバックアップとして維持します。 学習面だけでなく、子どもたちにとって学校に通うことは、心身の健康に大切です。 保護者の多くは不安を感じるかもしれませんが、通える期間のうちに登校することは子どもにとって良いことです。
