2021.02.26 ART FESTIVAL

This week we held our annual Art Festival. It is a chance for students to display their artistic and creative ability. It was a chance for parents (within corona safety guidelines) to view the art and craft outcomes and yearly growth of their child. At Seibo Elementary, we believe the students’ art and craft is high quality. We are very happy to display it. Recently, we are linking our 3-pillars project of Communication, Technology and Critical Thinking into all classes, including art and craft. This year we especially aimed for students to use critical thinking skills in their craftwork. Students carefully considered how to express feelings and images in the viewer, to consider their craftwork from the perspective of the viewer. Then, from that perspective consider their message and impact, working back from that point to create a plan to practically create that craftwork and make it into a real thing. For example, Year 3 students created a shop scene as their craftwork. Students carefully considered the products, shop design and how to display products in order to appeal to customers. From this starting point a plan was created to make the artwork practically. As well as thinking skills, this is a kind of analog technology skill. Technology is the effective use of tools. Recently, there is a lot of emphasis on integrating digital tools into classroom learning. However, it is also important for students to have strong skills with analog technology, too. In this way, subjects such as Art & Craft are not stand alone courses. They are fully integrated into a comprehensive vision of how to grow students’ ability.

今週は毎年恒例のアートフェスティバルを開催しました。子どもたちが芸術的で創造的な能力を発揮するチャンスです。また、保護者は図画工作の成果と子どもたちの１年間の成長を見るチャンスでした。聖母の子どもたちの作品は、どれも大変優れています。近年、私たちはコミュニケーション力、テクノロジー力、クリティカルシンキング力の3つの柱のプロジェクトを、図画工作を含むすべての教科にリンクしています。今年は特に、自分の作品にクリティカルシンキングスキルを組み込むことを目指しました。子どもたちは、見る人の視点を意識して自分の作品を考えるために、見る人の感情やイメージにどのように働きかければよいかをじっくり考えました。次に、その観点を大切にしながら自分のメッセージとその効果を考え、作品を実際に作成し実現していく計画をたてました。たとえば、3年生は、お店屋さんの一場面を作成しました。子どもたちは、お客さんにアピールするために、商品やショップのデザイン、商品の展示方法などを一生懸命考えました。これをスタートにして、アート作品として仕上げる計画が進んでいきました。これには、思考スキルと同様に、自分の頭で考え作り出す技術スキルも必要です。技術学はツールの効果的な使用法の１つです。最近、デジタルツールを教室での学習に使用することに重点が置かれています。しかし、子どもたちが自分の頭で考え、自分の手で作り出す技術に強いスキルを持っていることも重要です。このように、図画工作などの教科は、単なる独立した教科ではありません。それらは、子どもたちの能力を伸ばすための方法がすべて１つにつまったものと言えるでしょう。
